I like this thread and the info, bunny boots are definately in order for me and I like the idea of wearing plastic bags over your socks to save your boots from getting soaked.

Way back when.. I jumped on the back of a friends snowmachine to make a run over his trapline. It was only about 15 miles out so we were just going to run it an come back real quick.

About 8 miles out we were right on his trail in the middle of a creek when the ice gave out underneath us. We flipped over backwards and landed upside down in the water. The water was only about 2 feet deep and neither of us were hurt and when we got out from under the machine we saw the reason the ice had broken. The water had dropped out from under the ice so much so that when we were standing on the bottom of the creek but our heads were still under the ice. We could look up and down the creek under the ice.

We boosted each other out of the hole and tried to get the snowmachine out but failed. It was 15 below zero and we face an 8 mile walk out.

Although we had both fallen under the water we were not soaked to the skin because we got out so quickly. We just had an ice coat all over us. However we had waded around in the two foot deep water trying to lift the snowmachine out and our legs and feet were completely soaked.

He had bunny boots and I had sorrels. After about 4 miles I couldn’t feel anything from about mid calf down. His feet were toasty warm even though they were soaked. It was very hard to walk and controlling my feet became exhausting. We walked in finally and after warming up I had no problems with my feet but learned a good lesson about sorrels.

To plug the car in for the battery u need a battery blanket, it wraps around the battery to keep it warm. I would suggest also having a block heater installed into the water jacket by a ASE certified mechanic, Chrysler does have a combonation heater that comes installed in the dodge intrepid that is a battery blanket and water jacket block heater that plug into one single power cord. There is are also magnetic heaters that attach to bottom of the oil pan to keep your oil from freezing. The block heater is installed place of one of the engines expansion or freeze plugs. You can get both the battery blanket and block heater aftermarket from most automate stores for under $200. I hope this helps you, I hav recently been adding these items to my personal vehicle because here in Washington it does get cold enough to drain a battery at time and we hav been looking to relocating to Colorado in the Denver area.

This splice is going to require a minimum of 16 hours.

I was wearing black bunny boots, my feet were toasty warm no problems standing on ice or snow. The splicer I was assisting; was sitting down inside of a 10 foot deep man hole. Constantly complaining about how cold his feet were; using snowpack type boots. At one point, after listening to him whine complain; I said ‘take your boot off and put this on. He said a negative statement then he looked up and saw that I had my boot off; His eyes opened big as pancakes when he saw the massive amount of steam coming off my sock and from inside the boot. He exclaimed! Your feet are that warm ?? I laughed and said .. toast! He put the boot on quckly and was shocked at how warm it was inside. Gimmie the other one he quickly snapped. Dennis I said; I can have a brand new pair of those delivered to you in less than 3 days. I just gotta get me a pair of these he said. $300.00 bucks I said and you can have them by tuesday I bet. Three Hundred he screamed. how come so much? (Feb 86). I said a new pair is 200. 50 for the person who will run around and get them into the mail PRIORITY and the rest for postage etc.

I laughed very hard and said. Dennis next time your feet get cold (later today). JUST THINK about that $$ sitting in the bank .. That’s all that you gonna have to keep your feet warm with. I’m keeping my boots on today. suffer!!

I don’t care how much something costs. If it is going to keep me warm when working outside for long hours.. I don’t care about the money. I care about the comfort!!

Be smart.. buy bunny boots.. Yes they are awkward at first but you quickly get used to them. All my sons had brand new bunny boots when they went whaling in Barrow. Not once did they ever have to even think of their feet… which were nice warm like toast!!.
